Huron Sports Academy – More Than Just Athletics

At Huron Sports Academy, we believe that a well-rounded student-athlete is essential for success. While we are committed to developing athletic talent, our core focus is on providing an exceptional academic foundation for our students. We understand that academic excellence is the cornerstone for future opportunities, whether it’s pursuing higher education, a professional career, or simply becoming a well-rounded individual.

A Strong Academic Curriculum

Our rigorous academic program is designed to challenge and inspire our students. We have carefully selected curriculum materials that are both engaging and effective:

  • Reading/ELA: Amplify is a comprehensive program that uses a blend of fiction and nonfiction texts to teach students how to read, write, and think critically. It also includes a digital component that allows students to practice their skills and receive feedback.
  • Math: Ready Math is a research-based program that uses engaging activities and games to help students learn key math concepts. It also includes a focus on problem-solving and real-world applications.
  •  Science: Science Fusion is an inquiry-based program that uses hands-on activities and experiments to help students learn about the natural world. It also includes a focus on scientific literacy and critical thinking.

These programs are renowned for their ability to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and a deep love of learning. Our dedicated teachers are committed to creating a supportive and stimulating learning environment where every student can thrive.

We are excited to announce the launch of our comprehensive Blitz(tm) academic program created by Dr. Chad Carr.  This innovative program is designed to complement our core curriculum and provide additional support and enrichment opportunities for our students.

It was first implemented at Columbus Preparatory Academy (CPA), a public charter school failing academically by the 2006-07 school year. The Blitz™ took CPA from closure status to the #1 ranked public school in the state of Ohio within three years, a position it held while implementing The Blitz™ from 2010-2017.

The Blitz™ competition occurs each spring during the eight weeks leading up to the Ohio State Test (OST). Students play Blitz™ review games and become familiar with the vocabulary and structure of state assessments. During fun and friendly competition, students participate in a series of academic pep rallies where they:

  • Gain confidence in their ability to perform well on the test
  • Showcase their creative talents during school-wide games
  • Encourage one another to put forth their best effort academically & behaviorally
  • Receive rewards for excellence, including a series of field trips based on their end-of-year Blitz™ rankings

A Holistic Approach to Education

We believe that academics and athletics go hand-in-hand. The discipline, teamwork, and perseverance learned on the field translate directly into the classroom. Our student-athletes develop time management skills, the ability to handle pressure, and a strong work ethic, all of which are essential for academic success.

At Huron Sports Academy, we are committed to providing our students with the tools and support they need to excel in both academics and athletics. We believe that by nurturing the whole student, we are preparing them for a lifetime of achievement.

Huron Sports Academy is proud to offer a tuition-free education to students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. We are excited to open our doors this fall and welcome a new generation of student-athletes.

What is a Charter School?

What is a Charter School?

As a public charter school, we are open to all students and funded by the state, just like traditional public schools. However, we have the flexibility to design a unique learning environment that caters to our students’ specific needs and aspirations. According to the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, charter schools are independently operated public schools that have the freedom to design classrooms that meet their students’ needs. All charter schools operate under a contract with a charter school authorizer – usually a  nonprofit organization, government agency, or university – that holds them accountable to the exacting standards outlined in their “charter.”

Why Choose Charter?
The reasons parents choose charter schools for their children are just as unique as the students themselves. Here are a few of the reasons why families choose charter education:

Teachers
Charter schools are known for having dedicated administrators and teachers who have a stake in their students’ success. The charter model encourages innovation, thinking “outside the box,” and going the extra mile to help each student be successful.

School’s focus
Instead of a one size, fits all approach, charter schools can change it up! They may choose a specific educational methodology like Montessori or Waldorf or the school could emphasize STEM learning or competitive sports training, like Hinckley Prep. Parents are often drawn to a charter school for the specific programs it offers. Open Houses and special events on campus are excellent opportunities to get to know what makes each school unique.

Time for a change
Whether your child is struggling in his or her current school, needs extra challenge, or simply is ready for a different educational environment, charter schools offer a fresh approach to learning that many families appreciate. Every child is unique and charter schools offer many different options for meeting your family’s educational needs.

Benefits of Sports in Schools

Did you know that less than one-quarter (24%) of children 6 to 17 years of age participate in 60 minutes of physical activity every day? That means most children aren’t getting the exercise they need to prevent serious health issues like heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. And they’re missing out on the academic benefits too, since exercise is linked to better focus, memory, and classroom performance.

The CDC recommends 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical exercise a day for school-aged children. When kids are active at school, they are healthier, happier, and more successful in school. Here are a few of the benefits of sports and physical education in schools:

  • Improved attention
  • Better mood and memory
  • Lower risk of depression
  • More time on task
  • Fewer absences
  • Better behavior
  • Better bone & heart health
  • Healthier weight

Our experienced school leaders strongly believe in these benefits and implement them throughout the school day.
